Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik’s Memorial on 2 February 2010

On Saturday, 2nd August 2008, a memorial ceremony was held in Ujung Water Palace as a tribute to the late Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik; son of the last king of Karangasem, founder of Walter Spies Foundation with immense contribution to the art and culture of Bali such as founding Listibya (an agency for cultural preservation in Bali). He also arranged many spectacular festivals to continue Spies’ work to foster emerging artists. Outside the art and culture circle, Dr Anak Agung Made Djelantik was renowned as a doctor who had worked for many years with the World Health Organization to combat Malaria in Africa, the Middle East and throughout Indonesia. He was the first Balinese Director of Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

Madé Djelantik, our Honorary President of the Walter Spies Society Germany, passed away peacefully at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar which he founded many years ago. Yesterday, the present director of the hospital, Prof. Dr. dr. AA Gedé Sudewa Djelantik, informed me that very soon,'Rumah Sakit Sanglah' in Denpasar will be renamed in his honor.

From the royal family of Karangasem, Dr Djelantik had an amazing life, to match his vast range of talents. Amongst other things, he had been head of Bali's main teaching hospital at Sanglah, and a leading figure in the promotion and study of Balinese culture.

Proff Putra Agung crowned as the New Raja on 12 April 2009

One of the last 2 surviving sons of the Late Raja of Karangasem has be crowned as the new Panglingsir.Succeeding his late brother Dr AAM Djelantik,Proffessor Dr AAG Putra Agung with his wife IGA Adri was pronounced the head of the Puri Agung Karangasem and will now know as Ida Anak Agung Agung Gde Putra Agung. Puri Karangasem Historical Society on 8 April 2007

Puri Agung Karangasem, home of the royal family of Karangasem, covers three palaces built by the last Raja in the early 20th century: Puri Agung, Taman Ujung, Taman Tirtagannga. Stiff Chilli is helping Puri Karangasem in preserving the history both through video oral history and digitalising all written records.
